After a two-game span in which she helped her team pick up a pair of key victories, Tennessee’s Jewel Spear has been named SEC Co-Player of the Week along with Vanderbilt’s Mikayla Blakes, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Spear continued an incredible stretch of shooting, hitting 70 percent of her field goal attempts and 66.7 percent beyond the arc en route to averaging 22.5 points in No. 15 Tennessee’s victories over Auburn and Ole Miss last week.
Against Auburn last Thursday, Spear made five of nine shots from the field, including a 5-for-8 night from three-point range, and went two of two at the free-throw line to lead her team with 17 points in a 99-61 victory. The 5-foot-10 fifth-year guard also added four assists, three rebounds and two steals to her stat line against the Tigers.
On Sunday vs. RV/RV Ole Miss, the native of The Colony, Texas, turned in her second consecutive brilliant showing vs. the Rebels. After firing in 30 points in Oxford last season, Spear scorched the nets for 28 this year, connecting on nine of 11 shots, including 5-of-7 accuracy beyond the arc, and five of six charity shots. It marked the fifth time in 2024-25 that Spear had made five or more treys in a game. She tallied 15 of her points in the third quarter alone, helping her team create separation from Ole Miss by winning that frame, 25-20.
With those efforts, Spear improved her scoring average in SEC play to 15.4 ppg., fueled by 52-percent shooting from the field (59-113), 51.9-percent marksmanship beyond the arc (40-77) and 81.8-percent accuracy at the charity stripe (27-33). She ranks No. 1 in SEC play in both percentage (51.9) and three-pointers made per game (3.33).
This marked the second time Spear has earned SEC Player of the Week distinction, also gaining recognition on Feb. 6, 2024. She is also the second Lady Vol this season to be honored, joining Nov. 19 award-winner Talaysia Cooper.
