KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –Chaz Lanier of the University of Tennessee men’s basketball team is among five finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, as released Tuesday afternoon by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The annual Jerry West Award, named after the late Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player, celebrates its 11th year by highlighting the top shooting guards in Division I men’s college basketball.
Lanier, a fifth-year competitor in his first season at Tennessee, is joined in the elite group of finalists by Baylor’s V.J. Edgecombe, Memphis’ P.J. Haggerty, Texas’ Tre Johnson and Arizona’s Caleb Love.
With senior guard Zakai Zeiglertabbed Monday as a Bob Cousy Award finalist, Tennessee is the only school in the nation with a finalist for both backcourt honors.
Lanier is averaging 17.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in his lone season as a Volunteer, the former of which is fifth-best in the SEC. He paces the conference ranks fourth in Division I with 3.41 made 3-pointers per game, while his 40.7 3-point percentage is top-40 nationally and third in the SEC.
A native of Nashville, Tenn., who spent the first four years of his college career at North Florida, Lanier is a member of the Wooden Award Late Midseason Top 20 Watch List. A three-time SEC Player of the Week and two-time USBWA National Player of the Week, Lanier has double-digit points in 27 of his 29 outings, with 17-plus in 19, 21-plus in 11 and 25-plus in five.
Fan Voting for the Jerry West Award will begin March 7 on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process. The Selection Committee for the Jerry West Award is composed of top men’s college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2025 Jerry West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date during Final Four weekend, along with the four other members of the Men’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women’s Starting Five.
In 2023-24, a Tennessee player won a Starting Five distinction for the first time, as Dalton Knecht earned Julius Erving Award recognition.
