KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 1/2 Tennessee tied the program record for consecutive wins to start a season with Saturday’s 11-1 victory over St. Bonaventure, improving to 15-0 on the year.

The 2019 team also started the season with 15 straight wins before losing their first games in a Sunday series finale against Fresno State.

The Vols recorded their seventh run-rule win on Saturday, thanks to a walk-off grand slam from freshman infielder Manny Marin in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Florida native had a career-night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs. Dean CurleyAndrew Fischer and Dalton Bargo also drove in two runs apiece in the win.

Phillips Continues Impressive Start

Marcus Phillips gave Tennessee another dominant outing on the mound on Saturday, pitching a career-high 5.2 innings to earn his first win at the Division I level.

The junior righthander gave up a leadoff home run to start the game before retiring 13 of the next 14 batters he faced, with an error being the only thing to allow a runner to reach base in that stretch. Phillips allowed just one run on three hits and no walks while finishing with five strikeouts.

Another Grand Slam

The Vols added to their ridiculous early-season grand slam total with another on Saturday night, giving them eight through 15 games this season, just six shy of the NCAA Division I record of 14 by Arizona State in 2003.

Marin’s seventh-inning blast into the porches was the second walk-off grand slam of the week for the Big Orange after Blake Grimmer hit one to send the run-rule into effect against Radford on Tuesday.

Up Next

UT will look to finish off another series sweep on Sunday when they wrap up the weekend against the Bonnies at 1 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
