Vols in the NFL – Week 1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The NFL season is officially underway with Vols around the league making significant impacts in Week 1.

The season opened on Thursday night as the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs and Trey Smith defeated Baltimore 27-20.

Alvin Kamara kept the good times rolling in New Orleans as he carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and a score, while also pulling in five catches for 27 yards in the Saints’ 47-10 victory over the Panthers.

With 110 yards from scrimmage, Kamara marked the 50th game of his career with 100-plus scrimmage yards.

On the defensive side of the ball in New Orleans, Alontae Taylor logged a career-high three sacks with six total tackles, three TFLs and one pass breakup. He joins Rodney Harrison – father of current Vol Christian Harrison – as the only defensive backs since 1982 to record three individual sacks in a Week 1 game.

Darrell Taylor invoked memories of “The Monsters of the Midway” as he wreaked havoc on the Titans’ offense Sunday afternoon. The first-year Chicago Bear finished his Windy City debut with eight total tackles – two for loss – two sacks and a forced fumble.

Opening weekend was capped off by Jauan Jennings and the San Francisco 49ers defeating the New York Jets, 32-19, on Monday night. Jennings was targeted five times in the win and pulled down all five receptions for 64 yards.
